EVENTS
International Viking Festival 14-05-2026 – 17-05-2026
Visit the Viking encampment and wander past the market stalls.
There are numerous stands selling everything from historical jewellery to clothing, from soap to mead, from weaponry to toys. You’ll also find woodburning crafts, silver braiding, garments, shoes, glasswork, small leather goods, beads, and textiles. Vikings are not ones to sit still—they enjoy sharing stories about daily life in the early Middle Ages. On weekends, they give demonstrations of the various weapons and clothing used and worn by Vikings. Vikings were diligent farmers, skilled craftsmen, clever traders, brave warriors, and, above all, fearless explorers. Several encampments can be visited this weekend.
The Vikings have left a lasting impression that continues to this day. Many place names, especially in England, originate from Scandinavian languages. Jewellery and everyday objects used by Vikings have been found all across Europe. People also wrote about the Vikings: the English found them rather strange, for a major battle, they would spend hours washing themselves, combing their hair, and braiding their beards. Vikings believed that if they died in battle, they would go to Valhalla, a place where feasting and fighting continued for eternity. So it was best to look presentable!
Vikings in Dorestad The old school illustration from 1927 by J.H. Isings is well known: a proud Viking stands in splendid attire on the gangplank of his ship. His reddish-grey mane blows in the wind. In the background, the horizon is ablaze, Dorestad is going up in flames. Cheering Vikings return to the shore, heavily laden with looted treasures.
Nearly a hundred years later, we now know better. That is not how it happened in Dorestad.
Dorestad was an emporium, an international trading center. It flourished under Frankish rule from the mid-eighth century, especially during the reign of Charlemagne. The population at the time is estimated to have been in the thousands. Traders came from all over Europe. The later Vikings also gladly offered their goods here and took on cargo brought from the hinterland or from the (sometimes distant) south.
From 834 onward, Vikings came to Dorestad with less peaceful intentions. By then, the town’s position had already weakened. The river had changed course, moving farther away from the old bank and becoming less navigable. The administration of the realm had become less structured, and authority had declined. Other trade centers may have already been on the rise. It is even possible that the Viking attacks were part of a strategic plan by competing powers. Several plundering campaigns dealt the final blow to Dorestad, its inhabitants were killed or fled. And those great fires on the horizon? They never happened. Archaeological research has found no trace of them whatsoever. https://www.archeon.nl/nl/agenda/internationaal-viking-festival_2.html
Experience the Vikings This Summer Holiday 17-08-2026 – 23-08-2026
This summer holiday, we invite you to step back in time at Museumpark Archeon, located in the heart of the Green Heart of South Holland, and experience the age of the Vikings. In our Viking encampment, you can stroll past market stalls filled with handcrafted goods: from historical jewellery, clothing, and shoes to soap, mead, toys, woodburning crafts, glass, beads, and textiles.
Our Vikings are eager to tell you about daily life in the early Middle Ages. On weekends, they give impressive demonstrations showcasing the weapons and clothing they used. You’ll discover how they lived as farmers, craftsmen, traders, warriors, and explorers. On special days, multiple encampments can be admired, each with its own story.
Stories from Across the Seas The Vikings left their mark all across Europe. Many place names, especially in England, originate directly from Scandinavian languages. Archaeological finds of their jewellery and everyday objects are scattered throughout the continent. Did you know that, according to the English, Vikings spent a surprising amount of time on their appearance before a battle? They believed that fallen warriors would enter Valhalla, where they could feast and fight for eternity, and they wanted to look their best.
Dorestad: Trade, Prosperity, and Viking Raids In the early Middle Ages, Dorestad was one of the most important trading centers in Northwestern Europe. Under the rule of Charlemagne, this settlement grew into an international hub where merchants from across Europe gathered. Goods from the hinterland and the distant south were traded here, and the Vikings themselves were frequent traders.
From 834 onward, this picture began to change: Vikings increasingly arrived with less peaceful intentions. By then, Dorestad’s position had already weakened. The river had changed course, making the harbor less accessible, and central authority within the realm was declining. Other trading towns were also on the rise. Viking raids ultimately dealt the final blow to Dorestad, its inhabitants were killed or fled. Archaeological research shows there is no evidence for the large fires often associated with this period.
Come and Experience It Yourself. Book your visit now and enjoy a day full of history, stories, and adventure this summer at Museumpark Archeon.
